Women’s Financial Resilience Forum – October 2016

gse-33Many appreciated the opportunity to hear keynote speaker Dr Christine Nixon and MP Cathy McGowan speak and highlighted the prevalence of discrimination by financial institutions in the past experienced women including themselves. In October the Women’s Centre in partnership with Good Shepherd Microfinance held an information forum around Women’s Financial Resilience at the Albury Entertainment Centre. The forum was a perfect platform to raise awareness of the impact of financial exclusion for women, which is a form of financial abuse in our regional community. The forum discussed the economic and societal benefits of building women’s financial resilience. Financial resilience is the ability to access internal capabilities and appropriate and accessible external resources or supports in times of financial adversity. One of these resources includes the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) offering affordable, fair, safe and equitable credit for the purchase of goods and services. Approximately two million women in Australia have experienced financial abuse, yet awareness of the issue is so low that many of these women don’t identify themselves as victims. gse-7Christine Nixon facilitated a panel discussion with Kaily Goodsell—Senior Financial Counsellor at St David’s Care, Susie Geering—Microfinance worker at Women’s Centre and Sharni Edwards—Women’s Centre NILS Client. Many who attended were impacted by Sharni’s story and her journey involving financial abuse and how she was able to access the help of various services and programs such as the NILS at the Women’s Centre to purchase a fridge and retrieve her possessions in storage, to enable her to adequately furnish her home. The event was a great success and hope Good Shepherd Microfinance can continue in the future to deliver similar events across more rural/regional areas.
